Saul Marquez:
Welcome back to the Outcomes Rocket. Saul Marquez here. Today had the privilege of hosting Dr. Benjamin Jack. As an emergency medicine physician, he always keeps emergency kits on hand that include a unique collection of supplies. And because of his access to specialized equipment and medications and the training necessary to deploy them in difficult situations, he’s prepared to care for himself and others when regular health care is unavailable. In times like this with Coronavirus, do you really want to go into the E.R.? I mean, is it serious enough? How do you care for those you love and beyond? Right. Maybe you’re an employer. How do you care for your employees? Preparation has always given him certainty and confidence in facing those unforeseen circumstances, whether it be at home, travel abroad. Well, not much travel now, but it’s always good to be prepared. And so he founded Duration Health. To bring the same level of comprehensive medical preparedness to his patients and to provide free and open access to core medical knowledge required in emergencies. So today we’re gonna be covering that. It’s critical to know how to best care for yourself and your loved ones during this COVID 19 epidemic. And it’s such a privilege to have him here on a podcast. Dr. Jack, thanks for joining.

Dr. Benjamin Jack:
Thanks for having me, Saul.

Saul Marquez:
So let’s start off with what gets you going. What inspires your work in health care.

Dr. Benjamin Jack:
Sure. So as you said in the introduction and thank you for that kind introduction. I’m an emergency physician. I practice in emergency departments, mostly in Philadelphia. I trained in New York City. And I love working in the E.R. and seeing patients. And when I was practicing before this current crisis, I was putting together a kit of medications for myself. As you said, for traveling and for just general preparedness and found that that was really hard to do, even as an E.R. doctor. And duration health was born to solve that problem. And as you said, we prescribe and ship kits of emergency medications to have on hand when you need them. So we basically conduct telehealth visits online and then ship kits and medications to patients. And it’s been great to work with folks both before this crisis and during the crisis to help people be prepared in an emergency.

Saul Marquez:
Well, I think it’s great. You know, in today’s day where telehealth is becoming a necessity beyond just, hey, you know, we do this too. Having a way to deliver care is key. So talk to us about how you’re adding value to the health care ecosystem in today’s day with COVID-19 in front of us.

Dr. Benjamin Jack:
Sure. So the value proposition of our kit is that you can address common medical issues where you are. In most cases, people are home now. So that means at home. But as we start traveling again, if you’re traveling internationally, you can treat these common medical issues internationally without relying on local care. So with Duration Health and Duration Health health kit, it avoids you burdening your local health care resources. You don’t have to go to urgent care. You don’t have to go to the emergency room for minor issues. You don’t have to go see your primary care doctor in their office or even go to a pharmacy because you have medications that are used to treat the most common issues already on hand at home that have been essentially prescribed in advance.

Saul Marquez:
And so, you know, understanding best ways and best practices is key. Right? You know, a lot of folks may not be medically trained. And so talk to us about the kits and who could buy them and what can they expect to be able to do on their own if they’re not medically trained with the kit. And, you know, more of the service that surrounds what you guys provide.

Dr. Benjamin Jack:
Sure. So it’s worth going into detail a bit about how it actually works. So when you buy a Duration Health med kit, you schedule a video call with one of our providers and we review your medical history, any medications that you might be taking. We talk about what it is that you’re preparing for. Again, if that’s to be home in a rural area or to be traveling somewhere or why you anticipate being without access to medical care. And then we put together a custom kit of medications based on the most common complaints that urgent care for somebody like you. And then we ship out those medications to you. So the visits included, the prescribing is included. The medications are all included. And at your house arrives a kit have medications that you then keep. Hopefully you won’t ever have to use those medications or use most of the things that are in there, sort of like insurance against an unforeseen lack of access to medical care. Sure. You have them there just in case. And then on top of that, we provide ongoing support so you can reach out to us at any time, get a hold of an E.R. doctor and we can help you through whatever situation you might be facing. So the idea is not that you then have those medications and you figure out how to take them yourself. No, we provide support to you. You still have a doctor on the other end who’s helping you decide what’s appropriate and what’s not. It’s just that you already have the meds there in your hands. If you actually do need to take one of those medications. For people who are going somewhere where they expect to be without communication, you know, if you’re going camping or traveling in a third world country in a remote area, the kit comes with a field guide that talks you through how to use each of their medications in a pinch. But the idea is not that you’re treating yourself. It’s that you’re reaching out to us for help.

Saul Marquez:
Got it. It makes a lot of sense. It’s not just the kit, it’s the support and the guidance that comes with it.

Dr. Benjamin Jack:
Exactly. It’s a service and a product together.

Saul Marquez:
Got it. Got it. Get to know. And so you buy a kit and you know, it’s you go to the site, folks. It’s duration health dot come. You’ll see that the med kids start at four hundred ninety-nine U.S. dollars. It’s customizable. So that fee includes whenever they need somebody from your end physician, it includes it. It’s a 30-minute visit.

Dr. Benjamin Jack:
That’s right, sir.

Saul Marquez:
Talk to me about that.

Dr. Benjamin Jack:
Sure. Everything is included in that price. That includes both the initial 30- minute visit with a physician to figure out what’s going to go in your kit and then the ongoing support from the physician for a year. It’s all included in that price.

Saul Marquez:
Cool. Cool. So let’s say a year passes by. What do you do? Do you have to renew a subscription or how does that work?

Dr. Benjamin Jack:
Sure. So the reason it’s a year is that the shelf life of the medications is one year.

Saul Marquez:
Oh ok.

Dr. Benjamin Jack:
So the idea is that at the end of that year we talk to you again. We figure out what medications we need to renew. Are your circumstances the same or have they changed? And we renew the kit at that point.

Saul Marquez:
So how is. And thank you for that. And so difference matters. Right. And value provided matters. Talk to us about how this is different from a first aid kit.

Dr. Benjamin Jack:
Sure. So a first aid kit contains the more common items that you can find at the drugstore. And also is generally heavier on trauma care like bandages and tourniquets. We can include those items in our kits, too. But what makes our kids unique is the prescribing aspect. It’s the fact that we’re including these prescription medications that you can’t just buy at the drugstore. And more importantly, providing the infrastructure around prescribing those safely, providing education around their use and providing the ongoing support should you need to access one of those medications.

Saul Marquez:
Got it. So that’s the key difference. And so talk to us about some of those medications that might be in there.

Dr. Benjamin Jack:
Sure. So every kid is custom-built because there’s no set of medications that’s right for everyone. So, for example, sometimes will include antibiotic medication in the kit. But if you’re allergic to penicillin, you know, we’re not going include any penicillin. So there are medications that treat common issues. The things you commonly visit, an urgent care for. Allergic reactions, nausea, vomiting, minor infections, those types of things. It’s the type of thing that I see as far as minor complaints in like a fast track and urgent care setting that I see day in and day out.

Saul Marquez:
Mm hmm. Very cool. Very cool. And do you find that it is mostly… Who’s your main customer?

Dr. Benjamin Jack:
So our customer is actually it’s interesting because when we first launched Duration Health, when we launched at the end of twenty nineteen before this current crisis began, we thought that we would be serving mostly travelers, as I had alluded to. Because travelers are the people who are putting themselves in a situation where they wouldn’t be able to access routine medical care. But now we find that potentially everybody’s in that situation, that we’re all home. We’re not sure if our doctors are available or not. We’re not sure what the E.R. looks like or if the urgent care is open. So our audience has certainly broadened. But typically speaking, it’s everyone from travelers, people who live in rural areas, people who are going camping. People who live in disaster-prone areas. We get a lot of people preparing for like earthquakes and hurricanes. And then just people who want to be prepared at home who say, you know, I don’t have any specific plans, but I just want to be prepared and have what I need at home to care for myself.

Saul Marquez:
Love it. And so this is interesting. You know, I mean, right now. You have to be cautious, folks, when you do go to the E.R., the urgent care. And, you know, it’s good to know the options that you have today and beyond. But today, Right. focused on where we’re at today and how are caring for ourselves today in case of emergency. It’s great to know about duration health. So Dr. Jack has been kind enough to talk to us about how they’re doing things. What would you say would be your call out here COVID19 wise and how you guys could add value?

Dr. Benjamin Jack:
Sure. So I. Do you want to be clear that nothing in the kit treats COVID19. You know, all of the treatments at this point are experimental and certainly we do not have any medication, nor would we ever claim that we have any medication to treat COVID 19 directly. That’s not what we’re doing here. But what we are doing is allowing people who are at home who or who anticipate that local resources, local health care resources might be strained. We’re allowing people to treat other common complaints where they are. You know, all of the other things that bring people to the doctor haven’t gone away. So we’re addressing that other in a suite of issues. I would say that in this day and age, everybody, you know, it’s at the forefront how important it is to be prepared. And our mission is to prepare everyone to deal with medical emergencies. So that’s what we’re trying to educate people how to do. That’s what our kit is for. So check out our web site. Look at all the educational material on our site. It’s free and check out a kit and see if it might make sense for you.

Saul Marquez:
Love it. Benjamin. Again, folks, it’s duration health dot com. Excellent resource for you to consider. And, Dr. Jack, I really appreciate you sharing this with us.

Dr. Benjamin Jack:
My pleasure. Thanks for having me, Saul.
