Saul Marquez:
Hey, everybody! Welcome back to the Outcomes Rocket, Saul Marquez here, and today I have two amazing guests. They are just incredible individuals leading the space of meditation, wellness, and health care. First, we have Tristan Elizabeth Gribbina. She is the co-founder and meditation leader of Flow, and she’s been practicing meditation with great passion since 2000 and she’s been teaching since 2010. She’s led hundreds of meditation classes in Iceland and the Nordics where they’re they’re calling in from including dozens of Flow corporate sessions. Tristan’s the original Voice of Flow Meditation for Modern Life. She worked for over ten years as an actress in theatre, television, and films in Ireland and Iceland until 2004. Since then, she shifted her focus onto a path of transformation with a strong emphasis on meditation and spiritual work. She is an expert leader in modern-day meditation and breakthrough breathwork. We met four years ago. She took me through the experience. I think you guys are going to be excited today. You’re going to go through the experience. But here her partner in the business is Kristin Hrefna Halldorsdottir, and she’s the CEO of Flow and she’s an entrepreneur, a public speaker, writer, biohacker, and health tech visionary on a mission to bring meditation’s proven health benefits to modern life through VR and mobile with FLOW. And she’s got extensive experience from fintech and business developing new revenues and products in the startup world. She has useful experience in B2B sales and has a great network in the corporate world in Iceland. She is outstanding and also a recipient of her MBA from the University of Iceland. I’m so excited to talk to both of you today. And listeners, viewers, you’re going to enjoy this because this one’s going to be a little bit different. Something for all of us to think about our mental health and how we’re living our daily lives. So, such a pleasure to have both of you here. Welcome to the podcast.
Kristin Hrefna Halldorsdottir:
Thank you.
Tristan Gribbina:
Thank you. Saul. This is incredible. Such a great opportunity to be here with you.
Saul Marquez:
It is a great opportunity. And I’m enjoying this because, as you well know, Tristan, we connected four years ago. I mean, just amazing. You put the VR goggles on me. I did the experience. I was really stressed. I remember I was very stressed and I was walking around. This was four and a half years ago, folks. So I had just started the podcast and I was promoting it. T-shirts. And Tristan put on these goggles. I did a meditation for four minutes and my state just changed completely. I think you guys made the meeting for me.
Tristan Gribbina:
And I’ve never forgotten you, Saul from that Health 2.0 conference in Santa Clara. That was a very busy conference for us. But you were definitely. You and your podcast stood out for me. So I’m so glad we’re here now.
Saul Marquez:
Thank you. And so let’s chat about you guys first and then we could dive into FLOW. And so tell us a little bit about what inspires your work in health care.
Kristin Hrefna Halldorsdottir:
Thank you. I think for me personally, it was kind of the journey of coming. I started my career in politics and then went over to FinTech, both very busy worlds. And I think it’s similar to a lot of people in modern day time. Like we have an extremely busy life and doing my MBA and figuring out the way how to manage children at home and all those things that you need to do. I just felt that really on my own skin that I needed something more to be able to let go of the extra stress of the world. And so when I found myself out of a job, out of ending up being like and worried about my day, how I would turn my life, then I found Flow. And I thought, oh, they put copies on late in the interview when they were interviewing me for the job and I was meditate there and I had the similar experience as you and felt like I was transported to a really deserted place in Iceland and I felt like a unique connection to it. So it was just yeah, I think that’s why I joined the team and joined Tristan and the team on the mission to help people meditate in the world.
Tristan Gribbina:
I am so grateful that you did, Kristin. And we’re going to take everybody on this podcast with us to that one place that you went to. And we’re going to take everybody there because that’s what happened for me. In the year, 2000 in January, 2000 never forget, I went to a nine-day meditation retreat in the spiritual heart of Iceland in —s, which is the home of the great poets and amazing, amazing seeds of spiritual life. And I went there and after the nine days, my life was never the same. And I said, this is going to do this for the rest of my life. And I thought to myself, everybody wants this feeling. Yes, I never felt so alive. I never felt so connected to my own personal vision and passion. I felt so new. And I wanted everyone to have that. And I thought, gosh, doesn’t everybody want this? And then through the years since two thousand, I’ve been trying to get everybody around me to meditate. But it’s been difficult. It’s been difficult to get people because people think it’s difficult. Why do you sit there with your eyes closed so hard? And then I realized in 2015 I had a vision of working with cutting edge technology and that that could be a way to create tools that would make that profound experience more immediate, more just like boom. And that I mean that’s what’s got what gets me on fire every day. I love you.
Saul Marquez:
It is so great. So you came back from your nine-day retreat and everybody wants to have this and you’re right. And Christine, you were stressed and you put on these goggles during your interview and it was just like, wow, I got to be part of this. You know, I’ve had the feeling too. Right? And I told the story here at the beginning. So so why not just go through it? And so listeners, viewers.
Kristin Hrefna Halldorsdottir:
Let’s do it,
Saul Marquez:
This give you a treat. This could be fun.
Tristan Gribbina:
I wanted to explain it to everybody so everyone has the ability to do this after the podcast. It’s so easy. Just go to our website.
Tristan Gribbina:
And Saul is going to take us there.
Saul Marquez:
And it’s FLOW.is.
Tristan Gribbina:
Exactly so go to flow.is. And then at the top.
Saul Marquez:
I’ll go ahead and do that. So for those of you watching, you could see this. But for those of you listening, don’t worry, we’re actually going to play an audio of this for you. So make sure you’re not driving your car while you’re doing this.
Tristan Gribbina:
You actually do this meditation with your eyes open.
Saul Marquez:
You can, too? OK, good. That’s good to know.
Tristan Gribbina:
You can listen to it. And it’s going to upgrade your day. Even if you have your eyes open and you’re driving, just let the words inspire you. So you’re going to go to the at the top of the page. It says meditate now.
Saul Marquez:
All right.
And then when you go there, you’re just going to go to focus. We’re going to do the focus meditation, because that’s the one that you did first.
Kristin Hrefna Halldorsdottir:
I did, too.
Saul Marquez:
Did you do that one too, Christina?
Kristin Hrefna Halldorsdottir:
Yeah.
Saul Marquez:
Ok, all right. So are we kicking this off? All right. So folks, get ready. We have four minutes of meditation, anything we need to be thinking about or doing right now.
Tristan Gribbina:
So one thing I’d like to recommend that people do is that that you choose a word, some sort of quality you want to find more of today, like what is it you need today? And sometimes you just want to find more confidence or you want to find more energy or you want to calm your mind or focus your mind. That’s often what people are seeking. But if you have a hard time, like nailing down what it is you want to find, I often recommend people say focus on the word gratitude, because that word, when you meditate on the word gratitude, it really is always helpful in meditation.
Saul Marquez:
Love it. All right. Well, thank you for that tip here. Before we start, let’s get this meditation going.
Tristan Gribbina:
As we begin our focus, meditation noticed the sounds of nature.
Tristan Gribbina:
Take a deep breath.
Tristan Gribbina:
You can place your hands on your chest and take a full, deep breath. To help you focus, you can choose a quality you’d like to gain in this meditation.
Tristan Gribbina:
Your quality might be expressed in a word or a sentence, for example, I want to find more energy or con what might just be a feeling in your heart. Choose a quality that’s uniquely personal to you on this day, in this moment.
Tristan Gribbina:
There’s no limit to the qualities you can find from within, so aim high. Whatever comes to you, trust it.
Tristan Gribbina:
Keep your focus on this quality.
Tristan Gribbina:
Feel your desire for this quality.
Tristan Gribbina:
Breathe and trust, making an effort to open your heart and allow what’s happening.
Tristan Gribbina:
Trust the sensations you feel in your body and the emotions that you feel.
Tristan Gribbina:
To help keep your focus on this quality, you can repeat your word or your words to yourself as you breathe.
Tristan Gribbina:
Let your desire grow as you continue to drop teper.
Tristan Gribbina:
Continue to breathe and fill yourself with this quality.
Thank you for taking this time to meditate.
Saul Marquez:
That was awesome. That was great. Thank you. I feel so much more calm now and thank you for that. And folks, I hope you enjoyed that as well. And it went by so fast. Like I was just thinking, OK, four minutes, that’s a chunk of time here, but it just flew. So thank you guys so much. That was a ton of fun and really great. My word was, was commitment and just commitment to the listener’s commitment to you guys. Right? I mean, you’re here wanting to share this amazing experience with the world and commitment for us making health care better because there is an opportunity to do that. And so as we consider the offering of FLOW, flow.is, what would you say is the way that you are adding value to the health care ecosystem?
Kristin Hrefna Halldorsdottir:
I think by taking a lot of corporate clients and that’s what we do like that’s our main focus is taking corporations that struggled a little bit with their daily lives, like managing everything and has a stress level at the workplace. We help them to implement them a meditational culture so they can they’re allowed to take breaks before meetings instead of just saying getting the fifth cup of coffee, they can actually have a quick meditation and they can now do that through the mobile app or go to the VR headset and have a four minute meditation there or go to the browser. They have three different places where they can actually go to. And instead of going then with all the frustration that they used to have into the meeting, they eased back in the VCR or in the mobile app and just have to have a better outlook on the day. And I think that’s what we’re trying to bring to as many corporate cultural things all over the world. And we want to help people to have that as part of their daily lives.
Saul Marquez:
Yeah, that’s an awesome thing. And just curious. So access points right. And I’ll be honest, like for me, this is something where I’m very curious about how. You go to the store and you see like number one, I get that it’s available on your app. So now you could download it, Apple, Google, you name it, Android.
Tristan Gribbina:
Flow meditation.
Saul Marquez:
Awesome. And so that’s beautiful. And what if you want that VR experience, right. So like, there’s so many headsets out there, which ones align with what you guys have? Which one can I get? Because honestly, I’ve been wanting to get one and I just haven’t because I get confused. And if I could get the one that has yours on it, that’s what I’m going to get.
Kristin Hrefna Halldorsdottir:
I love it.
Tristan Gribbina:
Currently, we have our VR app on the Oculus go, OK, and then we are very soon going to be on the Oculus Rift. You can actually access our own app on the Oculus quest, but through side quests. So it’s free and you have to download it through the site. It’s kind of a back door. It’s a different system. Plug it into the computer and then connect it. But we’re also going to be on steam very soon. So that means more options as well. But so far, the current one is Oculus go.
Saul Marquez:
Ok, got it. So if you have an Oculus, go right now.
Tristan Gribbina:
Go,
Kristin Hrefna Halldorsdottir:
Go.
Saul Marquez:
Go flow baby. That’s really good to know. OK, and then obviously you guys are expanding, but you don’t even need these VR sets, folks. You just get it on your on your app store just to start, because it’s there’s nothing like this. OK, good. So I know, I know what goggles I’m going to get now.
Tristan Gribbina:
And I want to just mention that it can be because of the name flow is a little bit widely used. You have to go. It’d be good for people to go through our Flow.is our website in order to connect with the mobile app.
Saul Marquez:
Ok, got it. Got it. So just go to follow is and click on it because there’s a lot of flow out there. Yeah. Get the right flow. You got it. Makes sense. Yeah. And the reality is, look, we, whether you’re a corporate client, whether you’re in a hospital, a large IDN, small clinic, you’re going through a lot right now. And why not consider something like this to help you and your team do better and do better for themselves. Right. So talk to us a little bit about what makes what you guys do different or better than than what’s available today.
Tristan Gribbina:
Yeah, I want to share a story about a lady who came to visit Iceland with her family and she walked into a coffee shop and I was like, wow, this is an elegant lady. I got into a conversation with her. Turns out she was working at NYU Langone in New York and we got into a great conversation and she ended up and I ended up showing her Flow VR to her and her family. And she just fell in love with you because I want to show this to the two. My the people at the hospital. I said, please just take the headset with you and share it. This was before COVID. And she took the headset back to New York and she said everyone fell in love with it, the nurses. And then that headset ended up helping teens through COVID. So what’s different about Flo than the other medication? Apps that are out there is that it’s immediate. People have a profound experience like you did at that Health conference or at work or wherever you are because you’re immersed. You can have this immediate experience of meditation. You’re immersed in a three hundred and sixty degree nature or even from the mobile app. It’s more immersive because of the music and the nature scenery that inspires you. And then I would say also that it’s impactful in a way that I feel is unique because we’re not just encouraging people to come and focus their mind on in the way that mindfulness does so beautifully. And we’re not also teaching people how to sleep better because we are doing those things, but we’re also helping people to become energized or get more in touch with their higher goals, or just like it’s more of a personal transformational tool to empower positive change.
Kristin Hrefna Halldorsdottir:
I think meditation is like really special to a lot of corporate clients, really connect with that. Instead of taking the frustration with you to the next meeting, they let it go after the meditation and don’t need to take everything with them. So but I think also because what are doing in a time when people have difficulty traveling, we are actually taking people in systems that are not really immersive way to Iceland. You get to go to a location in VR where not a lot of people can have access to. It’s really unique places where you can feel the nature connection to nature. And a lot of the studies show that just looking at nature scenery’s is very good for boosting wellbeing and mental health and adding the guided meditation, which Tristan leads so beautifully and helps you to connect. And then maybe a little bit of that, the quirky Icelandic touch of the music. It’s not playing well in life. It’s more of work. It’s a big role. We’re connecting to the raw roots of nature, but not trying to get you into a fantasy land. I think that’s kind of unique with what we’re trying to do.
Tristan Gribbina:
Absolutely. Because there are some other options for VR and mental wellness that are out there, then they’re doing well and it’s great for pain relief and for different mental things. But what we do is very specific for meditation and this untouched nature of Iceland. We don’t put any effect on it. It’s pure and it’s magical.
Saul Marquez:
Yeah, it is. I mean, it is. I love it. Thank you for walking us through that. And there are many scenes you could pick them, choose where you want to go, where you want to go. I mean, like and especially now I was talking to my wife and we just we usually travel. And this year has just been an off-year for that. And so something like this could offer a little escape into our usual trip that we would take to change the scene around us.
Tristan Gribbina:
Exactly. And I think a lot of people feel that pressure when they’re working from home. You need it, even more, when you use your office in your own living room. Look, just like right now, you have kids coming and going and you have the same busy schedule, but you’re just in your house. And what better way to really feel like you’re being teleported to Icelandic nature. You are there. You’re so immersed in the scenery and everything.
Saul Marquez:
It’s awesome, especially with the VR goggles. I mean, like, I remember just looking around and it’s just an experience. So talk to us about how you’re making business better, improving outcomes. Give us some stories here. I would love to hear maybe one of your clients or or a personal experience.
Kristin Hrefna Halldorsdottir:
Yeah, well, I think we’ve had the luxury of working with 50 corporations in Iceland. And they I think they’re very they’re very different corporations. We have all from the energy sector to I.T. and fashion companies and banks and a lot of different corporations, and I think what inspires me the most is when I go into because I do most of the sales. So when I go into a meeting room with, like stressed or busy people that don’t seem like they’re eager to put on yoga pants and listen to the gong or something, I feel I can do the best our best work there, because I think you can help them see that, because what they see when I come into the meeting, they see a cool gadget, they see the VR goggles and they want to try.
Kristin Hrefna Halldorsdottir:
And I think that’s a great way to approach some people that aren’t eager to go into a yoga studio or something. So they’re totally change and influence a culture where it wouldn’t be a bit hesitant towards this kind of moving towards that. And they’re not those people that would do yoga at the office, but they’re willing to go into the phone booth or that someone else is in or have it at home and just say, like, nobody needs to know what you’re doing. You’re just playing with VR. But what you’re doing is you are calming your mind. And I feel like we’re collecting a lot of those stories from people that haven’t had a great experience and going into yoga or meditation classes because they feel like they’re unsuccessful. They feel like all the focus is on calming you, calm your mind and if you’re not not calm you’re failing somehow. And I think that’s common for a lot of people that haven’t done like a deep dive into this. And I remember that feeling. And for the first experiences, I had before I joined the Flow team, like I didn’t know if I was doing it right. Am I successful in meditation? Is this happening? Is this what’s supposed to happen or isn’t it? Or and I was even willing to put on yoga pants and listen to the gong. So, I mean, there are so many levels of this where I feel like we’re getting people from all over just to rethink the tools that you can use. And to pull in whether it’s through the Web or the VR or depending on the mood or the assist you need for the time, you can pull on the tool you need and then get immersed with it and get it’s kind of just like instead of having the fifth cup of coffee, you have a meditation.
Tristan Gribbina:
That’s absolutely right. And one of favorite quotes from it’s on a website from Couer, a big company in Sweden that did a seven-week test and measured everything. And they said a lot of great things. But one of the things that struck me was that the employees just felt like just having Flow at the workplace, being encouraged to meditate, just that alone made them feel better.
Saul Marquez:
Like they didn’t even have to do it but the invitation to.
Kristin Hrefna Halldorsdottir:
Yeah, yeah. And I think that’s sort of what you get reminded when you have the app on your phone or you have the goggles sitting there, you remind yourself on you. Yeah, I can do this. Yeah, I’m grateful. And focus on gratitude or you know, you pick on those because this is what we’re trying and that’s I guess the best. You know how we can describe what we’re actually doing. We’re teaching people not to have those tools every day and not just within the devices, but just when you see, you remind yourself that you’re going there.
Tristan Gribbina:
Absolutely. So you’re not dependent on the technology when you’re taking your walk. We are on your jog. Maybe you just are listening to your music and you’re using your tools. You’re using your focus tool. You’re using your breathing, you’re letting go, you’re moving. It’s just it’s in you become a part of how you live. And being a passionate meditator for over twenty years now, I wanted to make some tools that allow me enable me to meditate daily, just more easy, more access, better access. I’m using I use the tools. I use the flow meditation almost daily.
Kristin Hrefna Halldorsdottir:
We even as a team, did one at eleven. So what we did was actually to go to the everybody just listen to the meditation online and you mute yourself, but you are still doing it together. You just have this one quality from your phone or from the website and you’re still there together and then you can share afterwards like start your meeting or just have a small sharing. This is great. Thank you, guys. And I think it gives a better access or imitation of having a creative or honest interaction with each other, which is kind of difficult when you might be sitting in the same pajama bottoms for two days with the people online and you’re haven’t been out or whatever or just going back to your PlayStation and maybe you just don’t feel like really great. And then you can tell that and share that. And it’s easier, I think when you have opened up your mind a little bit with the meditations.
Saul Marquez:
Yeah, there’s a lot to be said about that. We go through the day, we go through life collecting stresses, ideas, and just I would imagine doing meditation like this as a group before a meeting up. You check a lot of that stuff at the door. You know, you leave all those things and you consciously make a decision to be here now with these people. Wow. Like I mean, we did this exercise today with the meditation. And I’m like here with you guys, you know, I get distracted sometimes it’s the truth. And but I feel like our exercise that we did together, I’m in like big time.
Tristan Gribbina:
Nice. I’m so grateful.
Saul Marquez:
I love it. So, you know, these things are never easy. Right? And so we oftentimes get setbacks. We learn most from those setbacks. What’s one of yours and what did you learn from it?
Tristan Gribbina:
I was thinking about this because the questions that you sent in advance, and I’m pretty sure the biggest setback that we faced so far was that when COVID hit, because we were really on a roll, I mean, Kristin had been on our team and we were like coming home with a new contract every week and our sales are going up. And we were really feeling super confident. COVID hit us. Our sales in Iceland flatlined. And then we even took a hit because Iceland’s economy is very driven on tourism. So a lot of companies that we were engaged with needed to cut back. And so we lost some of our revenue, monthly recurring revenue. And we were really faced with like, OK, how are we going to deal with this? And it was stressful because we had to make some cutbacks. We had to really pivot. And it’s not easy and it was painful. And then but we decided, OK, so what we’re going to do is we are going to focus on our core product, how we serve people, individuals. We created that web portal that we were using today.
Saul Marquez:
Oh, OK. Cool, cool.
Kristin Hrefna Halldorsdottir:
That was created just on one day because we just felt like we needed to continue to service those customers, even though nobody was at the office. Just wear the headsets. We actually just enjoyed that. And I think we learned a lot also just by seeing how the needs grew for these kinds of services, because people were more stressed and more anxious, I think, and because high uncertainty about the future is really anxious for a lot of people, but at the same time, we couldn’t access it. So that’s why I think we’re so grateful to be able to give people access to our mobile app now. And that was a focus point for us, having learned that we needed to have more access or more touchpoints with our customers, not just the headsets because we have been servicing them. We’ve been coming to the offices with the Treston showing up there and having a meditation class. And we’re providing a lot of different tools and services. So we had to turn everything online and focus on having multiple channels to service our customers.
Saul Marquez:
I love it, but what an awesome opportunity to expand the business with your mission. Right. And through access. Just awesome.
Kristin Hrefna Halldorsdottir:
Yeah, it’s fast-tracking the deployment of the mobile app needed to be done.
Saul Marquez:
Outstanding. Congratulations on that. It’s not easy.
Tristan Gribbina:
Definitely. It’s not easy. The crisis put pressure on us. And as you said about access, expand that access during this time. Because its needed and wanted.
Saul Marquez:
Yeah. Now is the time. And if you’re listening to this, obviously, you’re probably like, man, this is so cool. Make sure you check them out. Flow.is. And so what are you most excited about today?
Kristin Hrefna Halldorsdottir:
I think we are so, so excited about the future development of the products we have. We have so many ideas. You should just have a meeting with Tristan and comes up with hundreds of ideas and people meeting. So it’s kind of my job to cut down the most essential ideas and test them out. So we try to make minimum viable product to test what the new ideas should be, but what we want to explore is something that we should share with you, which is kind of exploring your feelings before you go into meditation and then afterwards and see whether it has changed. So you can keep a sort of a feeling diary. That’s one of the ideas. So we just wanted to share with you. So if you feel peaceful or angry or what do you feel before and you can maybe identify with a feeling or even go deeper into a more specific, I feel neglected or isolated or what? What do I feel? And identified and highlighted and then go into the meditation and see whether you could improve your feelings or how you feel if you feel different.
Saul Marquez:
I think it’s a great idea. I had a guest on the podcast several months ago, Jamie Pabst. She the founder of Spirit Tunes and her app takes you through its music. Really cool story. Actually, I don’t know. Have you guys listen to the podcast with her or not yet.
Tristan Gribbina:
We need to do it.
Saul Marquez:
Ok, she is awesome. And so when her mom had her, her mom went deaf, OK? And I guess this is a thing that could happen and it tends to be genetic. So she just developed this thing for music, you know, it’s passion for music. And so Spirit tune helps you with that. It’s the pre and post. So you tap on how you feel and then how you ended up. If you guys are thinking about that, I’m happy to put you guys in touch, if that’s something of interest. I feel like you guys would really hit it off.
Tristan Gribbina:
Pretty sure.
Saul Marquez:
Yeah. This is so great and definitely a lot to be excited about. And I feel like this is just such a gift to be having this chat with you guys today. Give us a closing thought and where the listeners and viewers could get in touch with you or engage with your app and everything that you offer.
Kristin Hrefna Halldorsdottir:
Thank you. I think Flow is on a mission to help people to meditate all over the world. Our mission is to have in the future have meditations on that in your native language. So we want to open up multiple markets. So if you are interested in this and you see the synergy of what we are doing, we would love to connect. And you just shoot us an email. I have Kristin@flow.is that is and it’s on the website and you can shoot us a message here or via social media or whatever, but we would want to expand our network in helping people to get this, get immersed with meditation, and get to know your feelings and get to know what you can experience from meditation with these immersive tools.
Tristan Gribbina:
Absolutely. So from our hearts to yours, we are here to honor our mission, to give access to these proven benefits of meditation through cutting edge technology.
