Saul Marquez:
Hey Outcomes Rocket Nation! Welcome back to the podcast. Can’t thank you enough for tuning in. We have been having a lot of fun and you’ve been listening to a lot of the amazing new hosts joining us on the Outcomes Rocket Network. And today, I have the pleasure of having an incredible individual on the podcast. Again, actually, you’ve heard from Michael Schwartz in the past. Michael is an incredible leader. He is the president of Health Karma and just an incredible person. He lost his health insurance some time ago and experienced one of the most aggravating and incomprehensible processes of trying to find an affordable doctor. He could find plenty of doctors on Yelp and Google, but he couldn’t find anything regarding pricing besides urgent cares and only a handful of doctors that had the option to book online. While he was going through this process, a light bulb went off in his head and he had, he said, there’s got to be a better way, and that’s when he started the business, and that was the beginning of his ongoing journey to fix healthcare. And today I’m going to, I’m announcing that Michael is joining us on the Outcomes Rocket as the host of Everyone Hates Healthcare. Yep, I just said it Everyone Hates Healthcare is going to be a fantastic show, but I’m not going to be able to tell you about it, Michael is. So with that, Michael, I want to welcome you again to the podcast, man, so glad to be with you!
Michael Swartz:
Saul, thank you so much for having me! I’m incredibly excited to be on and really be able to get out there and show people’s passion.
Saul Marquez:
Yeah, you know, and so, Michael, the thing that I really liked about the rawness of what we’re going to do here with you on Everyone Hates Healthcare is that it gets to the core of stories. So why don’t you share a little bit with the listeners what this podcast is going to be about?
Michael Swartz:
No question, so Everyone Hates Healthcare, when you first hear it it’s, what? We don’t hate healthcare. We are in healthcare. I know when I’ve talked to people about it, they look at it like, are you crazy? But Everyone Hates Healthcare is all about shining a light. There are so many problems going on with people’s everyday journey interacting with healthcare, whether it’s going to the doctor, whether it’s their insurance, whether it’s some sort of specialized treatment, mental health, everybody has a story. And for me, I know what’s resonated with me more than anything is people’s stories. So this is all about bringing these stories to everyone, to all the listeners, to all of you out there, but also giving people a platform to tell their story. And it could be, you could be in healthcare, you could never have worked in healthcare. We have people, all walks of life, that are coming on telling their story, and it’s just so much fun for me being able to really hear what everybody goes through because we can learn from other people. We can learn.
Saul Marquez:
Yeah, yeah. You know, and it’s great, guys. Michael has been recording some fascinating interviews, and it’s about the day-to-day, the consumer experience, how are we doing? You know, we had an interview recently with the CEO of Tampa General Hospital, and he, the question he asked was, how come we’re not giving people a Starbucks, an Apple, an Amazon experience in healthcare? Because if we don’t do that and we don’t get there, we’re not going to be successful. And the stories that Michael is going to be touching on get to the core of how do we deliver those types of experiences. So, Michael, talk to us about, you know, what type of people are we going to have on the podcast here and how often are you going to be doing this?
Michael Swartz:
So it is such a variety of different people. We have a Miss America contestant that ended up dealing with a lot of problems just in her own healthcare journey, to people that have really had a hard time with addiction and mental health. We’ve had people from the healthcare industry who are talking about what led them, what was their experience to, that got them in there. And for me, I know that when I’ve gone through this process of really trying to fix healthcare and building Health Karma, the thing that we always look to is what are the problems we’re trying to solve. So we’re all about having such a large mix because healthcare is different for everybody. Healthcare is, how I interact with healthcare is probably different than how you interact with healthcare, Saul, and all of you listeners, we all have our own experiences, problems, that lead us to experiencing healthcare in our own ways. With, your other question was how, when are we going to be releasing? Weekly, this is something where we have hundreds of millions, I think like 300 million people in America, and think about that. Each person has to interact with the healthcare system. And maybe it was them not interacting with the healthcare system that led to them having to interact with it. So we have a lot of stories from incredible guests, and we want this to be a platform for people to be able to hear these stories, to share what they learned through the process. But also, Everyone Hates Healthcare is a platform, if you’re sitting there listening to this, and you have an experience, you have a story, this is the platform for you. That’s why we’ve built this is to give people a place not to say, oh, healthcare is the worst, everybody is taking advantage, no, but the stories, the process. The only way we can start to change it is one step at the time, and that’s what we’re trying to do here.
Saul Marquez:
Love it, and it’s to talk about it, right? Getting, having a place where we could talk about it, and it’s okay. So talk to me about the name Everyone Hates Healthcare.
Michael Swartz:
So interesting story, I was actually, funny thing is I was, I stumbled across an old piece of paper that, when we were coming up with the podcast, we were trying to think through names, and I looked at it and there were good names, but they were the normal names. They were the names that you would expect to see from a healthcare podcast. And as we were going through developing how this podcast, how these stories, how are we going to tell these stories? I thought about my own experience in listening to podcasts and, big podcast guy, love podcasts, listen to all different types, healthcare. I mean, Saul, when you had me on the first time on Outcomes Rocket, I thought I was being pranked because I listened to you all the time and I’m like, oh my god, he’s reaching out to me, this is awesome. But I remember this, I was listening to a marketing podcast, all about growth, and if you use Apple Podcasts, you slide down and it says other podcasts you might like. And I remember stumbling across one that said, Everyone Hates Marketers, and I’m like, what? And I clicked on it, and guess what? I didn’t just click on it, I subscribed to it before I even listened to it, because I was so enthralled with that, and it wasn’t about how marketers are the worst. The guy was a marketer, but it was about how we can change marketing by helping marketers be better at what they do, and that’s when the light bulb went off, and it was like, Everyone Hates Healthcare, not people that are in healthcare. Everybody should love the people who get into healthcare because most of us just want to do good, we want to help people, we want to improve people’s lives, help solve their problems. So it was never about hate, but if we think about American healthcare, talk to anybody on the street and say, what do you think about healthcare? They probably won’t have the nicest things to say about it. So, when we landed on it, we just knew that Everyone Hates Healthcare, because whether you’re in healthcare or not, when you see that name, I think there’s a good chunk of Americans that will say, man, I hated that experience with healthcare or, I hate healthcare, they charge me so much. So bringing those stories to light can change the way that we interact with the healthcare system, and on the other side, from somebody who’s actually building a company that is focused on providing access to healthcare for Americans, we can hear the stories of people and think about, maybe what we thought about how we solve the problem we’re setting out to do, to give, fits in our case, to give affordable access, or maybe somebody out there working on a company that is focused on virtual diabetes management, but maybe our thoughts, when we were initially building this, wasn’t exactly the experiences that the person who it’s all about actually went through. So that’s where the name came about, and we wanted to be a little bit controversial because on these podcasts, our guests, they don’t hold back. Some are more vibrant, more explosive, others are more reserved, but we want people to really tell their story unfiltered. So when it comes to the show, when it comes to each guest, there’s, it might be a 30-minute show, it might be a 45-minute, but we give people that platform to tell the story and we want people to look at Everyone Hates Healthcare as that place to go to hear those stories. But also, if you want to tell your story, that, this is the place for you.
Saul Marquez:
No, that’s great, and, you know, we needed that piece because we cover a lot of B2B things, a lot of hospital level, business level topics that we were missing this element of the consumer, and I’m super excited to have Michael join us as the host of Everyone Hates Healthcare powered by the Outcomes Rocket Network. And so, next time you hear from Michael, it’ll be him at the mic, host of the show. I’m so excited to have him join us here Michael, can’t wait to get started here on this journey with you, man.
Michael Swartz:
I’m so excited. I thank you and I thank all of you listeners who are tuning in today, but also going to be tuning in to future interviews and also listeners right now that end up being guests on the show. We want people to tell their story and this is what it’s all about. So, Saul, thank you so much for this. I’m excited to build something great with you and all the listeners.
Saul Marquez:
Likewise, my friend. Looking forward to it and listeners excited to get this going. And if you have a healthcare story that you want to share, Michael, where can they get ahold of you?
Michael Swartz:
So they can get a hold of me at, and I’m going to give my email out, MSwartz, M S W A R T Z @ HealthKarma.org, or reach out to me on LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter. My tag, that I’ve had for a few years is actually MrFixHealthcare, so @MrFixHealthcare, but we’re all here trying to fix healthcare. It’s not just one person that’s going to fix this bad boy.
Saul Marquez:
Love it, Michael. Folks, reach out to Michael if you have a story and want to share it. Excited to have this podcast on board and for everybody to participate that has a story. Michael, thank you so much. Looking forward to this.
Michael Swartz:
Thank you, Saul, and I look forward to it as well.
