Welcome back to the Outcomes Rocket. Saul Marquez is here. And today I have the privilege of bringing back on Dr. William Farrow. If you remember the interview. He’s the founder of Betr Health. Their a digital therapeutics company based in Raleigh, North Carolina, uber-confident in their high engagement and outcomes, Betr works with health plan members at their own expense unless they reach clinically significant outcomes. And frankly, I wasn’t feeling too well. I was feeling heavy. I was feeling not so comfortable. And I met Bill through this podcast. And I’ve got to say. I’m so grateful. So probably it’s been Bill,so firstly, I want to say welcome back. Bill, thanks for for joining us. I’m glad you’re here.

Bill Ferro:
My pleasure. My pleasure. Thank you for having me, Saul.

Saul Marquez:
So, when did we get…it was about two months ago, right?

Bill Ferro:
Yeah. About February.

Saul Marquez:
February. Ok. And so I said to my wife, you know what, babe? We’re going to try this. And Betr Health is a basically a eating plan. And after literally doing it for four weeks, I was down 12 pounds and I’m still down to 12 pounds. So firstly, I want to say thank you, Dr. Ferro.

Bill Ferro:
You can thank your body. Your body is the one that did the work. But I’ll take some credit for that. So, yes, thank you.

Saul Marquez:
I mean, just incredible. And so, you know, the problem that my wife and I had before we discovered Betr Health was that it’s just so hard to follow a plan. And oftentimes it’s not tasty. And we got frustrated. You know, we felt like it just it was hard. You know, and you go after the holidays, you kind of get into this weird pattern of not being so good about what you eat and what was different about what you do, Dr. Farrow, through your service is is really how clear it is, what you have to eat, when you have to eat it, what foods. All of the recipes are available. And really, it was like the day after we started, I had already lost two pounds. I realized that this thing was going to work, but I was still kind of skeptical. And that’s when I said, you know what? Let’s see how this thing holds. And literally two months later, I still am 12 pounds down. And I’ve got to tell you that it’s promising. And now my wife lost eight pounds as well. And the problem that I feel like you solve for us, Bill, is just having a life skill. You know, like you introduced recipes to us and a foundation that not only helped us lose weight, but also made us feel more energetic. And so it works. And just want to say thank you.

Bill Ferro:
My pleasure. My pleasure. I have a follow-up question for you there. Yeah, so part of our protocol is when you say it works. The protocol is really to turn it back on the person and say, listen, your body was destined to thrive. Your body was destined to be great. It’s just finding the right fuel and reducing as much stress so it can thrive. Right. Right. somebody times we often think of our cells from the outside, always looking for what’s the outside. So really the person that deserves all the. Thanks. Thanks. Here’s your internal body and the recipes are designed to do just that. Help you with your digestive health. Help you with lowering inflammation. Essentially just allowing your body to go to work. So my question to you is because we do an elimination reintroduction process to help people figure out what foods work best for them and which ones may not be working well. Do you and members’ your wife uncover any type of food that was not working well with you when you went through it? You know what?

Saul Marquez:
There were a couple of things. One was rice. And another thing was broccoli.

Bill Ferro:
Did that shock you?

Saul Marquez:
It did.

Bill Ferro:
Aren’t those the things they keep telling to tell everybody to eat?

Saul Marquez:
Right. Yeah. And so just finding these changes that were reintroduced before, you’re like, well, no, it’s broccoli. It’s healthy. All rice, you know, brown rice. Make sure you just don’t eat too much of it. But the changes in the weight were drastic. The shift because you’re recording your weight every morning when you wake up. And there’s just total accountability and visibility into those changes. So. Yeah, yeah. No, that’s good. And I had forgotten about that. I just don’t eat it anymore.

Bill Ferro:
And then, you know, you, you, well you were taking pictures of your food. And so sometimes people say, oh so is it, is it accountability? I say, well no, it’s actually helping you figure out what works best. You said by taking the picture, the food, you could then look back a day or two and say, you know what, I see my weight went up or was it my mood? Was it I didn’t get enough sleep, did not get enough hydration. I always tell people, look for the hidden salt, look for hidden stressors, you know, physical, chemical, because actually exercise sometimes can be counterproductive to weight loss, particularly when your body is not in balance. And so the whole goal is to help you get back into balance and have those aha moments. Like it’s really easy to look at a program, say, oh, I already know how to eat, I just need to do it, or it must just be calories in, calories out. Everyone’s always looking for that kind of. Well this must be just like that would really it’s you you have to figure out what works best for you. And this is just a protocol to help you do that. The idea of the coach, of course, is a little bit of accountability that helps that you have a dedicated coach. I think that’s the other advantage point we have is that a lot of programs have coaching, but this is a dedicated coach, someone who gets to know you right from the beginning to help you figure this out. And then after 60 days, you’re on your own. You figure this out. You learned it on your own. Our goal is to empower the people. And by you just figuring out those who trigger foods is why you’re able to sustain this. You said you’re gut, got to save information and you’ve put it into action. It tasted good. And now you and your wife have a plan for the future. And really, at the end of the day, better health is making it so you don’t need us. And hopefully, that’s how it is in a big way.

Saul Marquez:
And we left the program with I mean, we printed out a bunch of recipes and they’re literally like, that’s what my wife goes off of now. And all the foods are clear. And yeah, I forgot, totally forgot about the pictures. Like you literally, folks, you got to take pictures of your meals and send them to your coach and my coach Elise was awesome. She just held me accountable. She asked me questions like, hey, anything off today? Or I mean, just I mean, total support. The thing that is so interesting about all this, Dr. Farrow, is like how you guys work your business. Right. So you have two sides to it. You have a business to consumer and a B2B. On the B2B side, you guys are working with health plans. You literally do not charge them unless you get their members benefits. Tell me more about that. And then also tell me more about the B2C just so that the listeners could appreciate how you guys work. And then the best place where they can reach you to explore.

Bill Ferro:
Yeah, that’s great. So I’ll start with what we call pay for performance, which is a term that’s come out in the last few years. So we are put up against other providers like us that provide these digital therapeutics and we go to the health plan or the employer group and say, look, we’re confident in our results. We’re confident in our outcomes. We’re confident in how we can work with people virtually from all walks of life. We’ll take them on. We’ll take them through this protocol. And when they hit specific milestones, such as five percent weight loss, which the reason why we picked that is. The CDC who’s studied that, hey, if you hit five to 10 percent weight loss, that’s clinically significant to reverse most of these chronic diseases, including diabetes and hypertension, some of the bigger ones. And we take them on and we take them through this protocol. And the faster we get them to those results, the more sustainable we get them to those results were paid off milestones throughout the year. So it’s not just how quickly we can get them to the five percent weight loss, but it’s also we get paid a few months later to 12 months later for the sustainability of the protocol. And we’re happy to take that at risk because we have the secret sauce everyone else is talking about. How are you going to get the person to make behavior change? How are you going to get them to change all these behaviors? No.

Bill Ferro:
People, they need motivation. They need a carrot or a stick. We say no, no, you just need physiological change. And when that physiological change like you’ve experienced, that happens within 24 hours of nourishing your body the right way. Three or four days into it, even though, like you mentioned, you were still cynical and skeptical, like as is weight loss going to continue? So you are making a physiological change, which was the difference. And it tasted good and your body liked it, which is why you’re able to sustain it. So we were able to put our money where our mouth is, so to speak, and pun intended by using this digestive health focus, by using the fact that everybody is different. Helping them figure it out. And by getting quick results, which helps, of course, with engagement, right.. It’s a lot easier to gauge is something you’re seeing the results we’re able to offer a completely at risk. We’re covered by plans like Blue Shield of California. A lot of Anthem’s as well as we work directly with employer groups and we really enjoy it because for us, we don’t have to be marketing gurus. We can really just go to these health plans and employer groups. Great value proposition for both of us. They can send us the clients. We can get them healthier and they are saving a bundle.

Bill Ferro:
The CEO of Blue Shield of California said we’re saving him one hundred and fifty dollars per participant per month, and that’s for his diabetic. So it’s great, fair fee for service. And we hope to continue. Yeah on the direct to consumer front. That’s where we started. And I think that also gave us the advantage we had to make this consumer-centric. We had to make it so that people actually wanted to come to do it. And you have to hold yourself to a higher standard. I think some of the programs out there started building B2B and they maybe left the customer out of it. So we started that way. So you can actually go online, do the program, work with a coach for a few weeks to a month. Same rules apply. If you work with us to the first two weeks and you’re just not over the moon. If you’re not a raving fan, for whatever reason, we just refunds you 100 percent, literally no questions asked, which is really good. What we do, we have five star, I don’t know, eight hundred and fifty-five star reviews now on Google and Facebook and ninety net promoter score. CDC approved but ultimately at the end of the day.
